The Bright Black Sea A Golden Age Inspired Interplanetary Adventure Wil Litang wouldn’t have believed that “May you live in interesting times” was a curse, until he was appointed captain of the interplanetary freighter Lost Star and life got interesting. By the time his first voyage ends, the ship’s owners have died and interplanetary trade has slumped so sharply that the ship is likely to be laid up and the crew paid off. Life gets even more interesting when the ship’s mysterious, and deadly, past catches up with it. Driven by financial necessity and the ship’s threatening past, Captain Litang takes the Lost Star into the lawless asteroid belts of the Nine Star Nebula known as the “drifts”. There, he discovers to his dismay, that all the tales old spaceers used to tell about the drifts – the ones with pirates, outlawed robots, and the mysterious dragons of the drifts – were not the wildly exaggerated yarns he believed they were. Indeed, he’ll have plenty of his own to spin some day. If he survives. When I set out to write what evolved into The Bright Black Sea, I wanted to write a story recalling the science fiction stories of my youth, now half a century past. A story with a retro feel – rocket ships instead of star ships, future technology as a golden age writer might’ve imagined it, with stories of mystery, danger, and adventure. But, I also wanted to write a story I could enjoy today. I’ve grown up and I’m a bit more particular these days. I wanted to travel in the company of richly drawn characters woven into a multi-threaded story. I wanted worlds of wonder grounded in the details of everyday life. I like the understated, so the fate of the galaxy needn’t hang in the balance – staying alive in the face of a deadly robot or a ninja-like assassin could be just as exciting. I prefer stories viewed from the ground level of life, so it’s a first person narrative. And I wanted a story told with dialog, with humor, romance, and hopefully, style. In short, I wanted The Bright Black Sea to be a space opera that combines classic golden age stories with a lighthearted novelistic approach to mystery and adventure. The story of the Lost Star began with the idea of offering it as a serialized adventure. I never felt comfortable with that format, and I ended up writing it in three volumes. However, since the three volumes make up one novel, I am offering the complete story as it is meant to be – one long, episodic novel, The Bright Black Sea. C. Litka is the author of the science fiction steampunk adventure romance, A Summer in Amber and the science fiction romance Some Day Days, both of which are also available in this ebook store. And just on the off chance you see my profile photo and my old-fashioned story and wonder – well, I find the premise that speculative fiction should conform to any orthodoxy pure nonsense. Science fiction needs to, and benefits from, accepting and embracing everyone as writers and readers, and all the stories they have to tell.
