The Princess of Thornwood Drive by Khalia Moreau

More than a year ago, due to an accident the lives of Laine’s parents were taken and her younger sister was unable to move and talk. After that, Laine faced the financial problems while looking after her sister, and trying to manage the time between school and work. When she could take her sister to Lake Forest Adult Day Center she feels some relief.

Alice, on the other hand, sees her reality differently. He considers himself and his family members of the Mirendal royal family. He believes he is cursed and that his parents have been taken. Now she adjusts to her new life and tries to explore the magical land where mermaids and fairies live. “Princess on Thorn Drive” is a unique blend of genres. It’s part strong, modern story and part fantasy that makes it stand out from other recent books.

The book discusses the violence in the medical profession and raises the issues like the death of parents, sexual abuse (which is never fully explained) and mental health problems very openly. She is not ashamed of all the challenges of being a caregiver and the challenges that comes with it. There are a few warnings about Jumbies, but don’t expect too much Trinidadian legends. Also, don’t think that this fantasy story is like it’s a classic fantasy. The fantasy elements of the book provide an interesting contrast to the real-life issues it addresses. The book is emotionally powerful and effortless and keeps a good pace throughout.
